There’s something magical about West Auckland evenings, and this family session at Wainamu Lake reminded me exactly why I love photographing out here.

We arrived to the most gorgeous golden light — the kind you hope for but never fully expect. Wainamu Lake always delivers, but this evening was especially dreamy. The warm glow over the dunes and water created the perfect backdrop for a relaxed family shoot.

This family were a little more on the conservative side, which is completely normal. Not everyone jumps straight into the playful poses or big laughs — and honestly, that’s part of the beauty of family photography. It’s about gently guiding people into feeling comfortable enough to just be themselves.

With a bit of encouragement (and a few fun prompts!), they loosened up. Before long we had them spinning, laughing, and sharing those sweet in-between moments that feel so genuine. The kind you can’t stage — the kind that happen when a family just leans into being present with each other.

The result? Images full of warmth, connection and golden light. Those soft smiles, the hand squeezes, the real laughter — everything that makes a family session feel honest and meaningful.
